Why doing it all is holding you back
HUW EDWARDS
I often hear people say “If I don’t do it, it won’t get done right.”
Or “Doing it myself is easier than teaching someone how to do it.”
Is it?
Most people fail to realize their goals not because they lack the skill, but because they refuse to delegate. They feel they need to control everything to ensure it’s done right. Which just doesn’t lead to success over the long term.
In today’s issue, we’ll explore how doing it all holds you back from achieving your goals.
🗯️ You Can’t Do Everything
Recall the classic tale of The Wizard of Oz? How a young girl set out on a journey to return home after being swept into a strange land. She believed she’ll be able to handle everything on her own. But after facing several challenges in the course of her journey, it dawned on her that she can’t do it all alone.
Along the way, she met Scarecrow (wisdom), Tin Man (heart), and Cowardly Lion (courage), each of whom brings a unique skill to the group. She eventually learned that allowing the right people handle certain aspect of her mission drove her faster to achieving her goal.
This highlights the power of strategic collaboration, and letting go of the need to control everything.
🧠 The Misleading “I Can Do It All” Mindset
The human mind has a way of making us feel we can and should handle everything ourselves. Many high achievers fall into the trap. Taking on extra projects, refusing to delegate, believing that others won’t do it as well as you can. At first, it may feel empowering. You’re making progress. And everything seems to be in control. But over time, this approach backfires.
Activities start to pile up.
Juggling too much drains your energy, and you start losing focus on the tasks that really matter. You are busy but the wrong kind of busy. You work all day, yet your impact doesn’t commensurate with the work you put in. High-leverage goal gets buried under a bunch of mundane and repetitive activities. Important decisions get delayed. And you’re left wondering why things aren’t moving as fast as they should.
This cycle eventually leads to burnout, perceived underperformance, inefficiency, and even missed opportunities for bigger wins. The bid vivid picture you visualized now seems unattainable. Why so? As Rory Vaden famously says, “diluted focus always lead to diluted results”.
❤️ The Power of Letting Go
Letting go doesn’t mean losing control. It’s more like gaining freedom. Think of it as multiplying your time. Oh yes, you can. When you delegate tasks or assignments, it allows you to focus on what truly matters. Imagine the relief of passing off tasks that drain your energy or time. You’re suddenly getting more things done. Not just anything, but really hitting significant milestones.
Your energy becomes channeled to the bigger picture of your goal — growing your business, or closing deals. You get to elevate your focus to higher-impact areas like strategy, and innovation. You’ll no longer feel like 24hrs is no longer enough to clear your to-dos because you aren’t bogged down by minute details. Your business grows faster, and you’ll start to feel lighter.
Less stress.
Less burn out.
Less overwhelm.
You get to spend more time with family, and build deep connections with your ideal network. And you’ll finally start to feel like you’re reaching your goals.
🤲 Time to Let Go
Letting things go is the fastest way to achieve your goal. You can't do it all, and you don’t have to.
Here are 5 ways you can start delegating:
Pinpoint what’s holding you back: List out the tasks that drain your time but aren’t driving your business forward. Think daily admin, repetitive tasks, or even client follow-ups. If you don’t NEED to be the one doing it, pass it on.
Choose the right people: It’s not just about offloading tasks, it’s about finding those who are genuinely better at certain things than you. Maybe hire a virtual assistant for operations or bring in a marketing expert who lives and breathes campaigns.
Set crystal-clear expectations: When you hand over a task, explain the outcome you want in a way that’s specific, but don’t micromanage the process. It’s their job to figure out how to get there, your job is to paint the picture.
Double down on your zone of genius: With tasks delegated, pour your energy into the areas that really need your attention - the value proposition of your business, growing your vision, driving strategy, or even self development. That’s where your time will have the biggest impact.
🎯 What’s holding you back?
What can you let go of today to step into your next level of success? Don’t overthink it. Just pass it on. Ditch the “no one will do it like me.” You’ll be amazed there are people that can do it better than you.
In fact, doing it all won’t make you a hero. It will only slow you down from reaching your goals. In the words of Coco Chanel: “To achieve great things, you must first let go of small things."
P.S: What's one task you can start delegating today to free up time for your most important goals? Let it go. Your future self will thank you.
