Feeling stuck? Blame it on the prison you created

HUW EDWARDS

It’s common to feel lost, stuck or stagnant at some point in life. You’ve achieved a lot of great feats. But deep down, you know you’re not where you want to be. And you feel like everything has come to a halt.

Many people wrestle with this feeling, not realizing they've built the barriers themselves. Today, we’ll explore these self imposed limits and how you can overcome it.

🗯️ My Aha Moment

I once thought I had life all figured out. I had a great career, a good life, and a comfortable routine. But deep down, I knew I was made for more. The funny thing is I only thought about how much more I could do. But I wasn’t really doing much about it. I was afraid if I bought that business or accepted that offer, I would fail. The thought of losing everything I'd worked so hard for paralyzed me.

What if I couldn't meet the expectations? What if I made a fool of myself? These thoughts blurred my ambition. The more the thoughts grew in my head, the more stagnant I felt, and the more unhappy I became.

I started to feel a nagging dissatisfaction and restlessness that I couldn't shake off no matter how hard I tried to convince myself I should be content. But not for so long.

I finally realized I was the barrier that held me from reaching the level of achievement I desired.

🧠 Are You Your Own Obstacle?

You’re successful, driven, and people see you as a high performer. But you feel like you’re not living up to your fullest potential. Why so?

Sometimes the thing holding you back isn’t out there; it’s inside. No matter how much success you’ve already achieved, there are hidden fears and beliefs that can sabotage your progress. Maybe it’s the fear of failure that keeps you playing safe.

Or maybe it’s imposter syndrome, making you feel like you don’t belong in the room, even when you’ve earned your place. Making you question if you’re good enough, if you’ll be rejected, or if success might be more than you can handle. Soon, you’re overthinking every decision, hesitating on actions you used to take confidently.

You start avoiding risks, second-guessing your instincts. Each time you hold back, you’re unknowingly building a barrier over your own potential. You stop trusting yourself and start caring too much about others’ opinions. See how your own thoughts have built a barrier over your progress? They’re quite sneaky because they don’t always show up as obvious fears.

Sometimes, it’s a tendency to overthink. Other times, it’s choosing “safe” actions that don’t stretch you, or telling yourself you need to prepare just a bit more before taking the leap.

Somewhere along the way, you stopped believing in your own instincts. And before you know it, you’re feeling lost and uncertain.

How can you break through this barrier?

❤️ Trust Yourself and Trust Yourself Some More

Recognizing that you are often the one standing in your own way can be a hard pill to swallow. But it’s a liberating realization you need to regain control of your life.

Learn to first reconnect with the one person who truly knows what you’re capable of — YOU. Trust yourself all over again.

When you feel that familiar doubt creeping in, pause. Recognize it for what it is — just fear, and that’s okay. Realize you’ve done hard things before, that you’ve pushed past limits that have brought you this far.

Trust the decisions that led to the success you’ve achieved. Trust the gut feelings you’ve been ignoring. Stop trying to be so perfect.

When you let go of the need for everything to be perfect, you’ll let go of the fear of what people will say, do, or how they may react. You’ll become more aligned with who you really are, and that alignment will bring momentum.

Then comes the epiphany of all the great things you’ve limited yourself from achieving. And you’ll feel empowered to finally chase those dreams with clarity, trust, and fierce determination.

🤲 Let Go of Your Self-imposed Limits

As Franklin D. Roosevelt says "The only limit to our realization of tomorrow is our doubts of today." It’s one thing to acknowledge you’ve held yourself back all these time, It’s another to get back on track with your dreams and goals. Here’s how you can start breaking through those self-imposed barriers:

  1. Identify the ceiling: Reflect on your biggest frustrations. Where do you feel blocked or stagnant? Then ask yourself: what beliefs are driving those feelings? Often, you’ll find you’ve been clinging to limiting beliefs about yourself, your abilities, or the risks involved.

  2. Take imperfect action: Stop waiting for the perfect moment or the perfect plan. Take bold, messy, imperfect action. See the uncertainty as part of the journey. It should excite you enough to try.

  3. Surround yourself with the right people: Your tribe matters. Find people who are ahead of you, who will challenge your thinking, and who will call you out when they see you playing small. Join mastermind groups, hire a coach, or build a peer group that holds you accountable to greater heights.

The two key things to a successful life are the people around you, and you.

🎯 What's Your Next Big Move?

What if the only thing keeping you from your next level of success is the doubt you’ve created in your mind? If you knew nothing was standing in your way, what would you do differently?

That’s your aha moment.

Start taking those actions you’ve been avoiding. And unleash your fullest potential.
